Though it isn’t unprecedented to get another day above 90 degrees this late in the year (the all-time latest such day in Madison’s history is Oct. 14, 1975), it is very likely our run at the record of 90-degree days in a season will end at 39 — agonizingly one day shy of the record 40 set in 1955. Our remarkably warm summer continues to take aim at some all-time record measures of heat here in Madison.
Just as we poked into the severe drought category on July 18, we were visited by fairly widespread heavy rains that night that delivered 1.43 inches of rain to Dane County Regional Airport. The morning of July 24 brought another 0.56 inches of rain and still more came that night into the morning of July 25. Thus, at least some relief of the drought has recently come our way. With another wave of dangerous heat upon us, it is of interest to consider how the last heat wave rates alongside other memorable heat waves. As we head from early to late spring during the month of May, there are a number of ways to measure this progress. One way is to consider how often we experience a temperature 90 degrees during May. The last time Madison reached 90 degrees in May was just two years ago — on May 24, 2010. This is a relatively rare occurrence, however, as Madison has reached 90 degrees in May only 10 times since 1971 (once each in 2006, 1991, and 1988; twice each in 1978 and 1977 and three times in 1975).
