Recently, the Duluth-Superior metro area had devastating flooding a result of rainfall totals of 10 inches or more in some locations. You may have seen photographs of the damage wrought by the flood waters — washed-out roads, flooded homes, ruined crops, etc.

Even in the face of such dramatic damage it is easy to overlook the enormous amount of energy that is involved in simply processing the water involved in such enormous amounts of precipitation. Continue reading →

When does Hurricane Season begin?

The Atlantic hurricane season officially began Friday, although there already has been some tropical cyclone activity in the Atlantic this season.

Throughout much of last week, the Southeast dealt with Tropical Storm Beryl. Typical for early season storms, Beryl was not very well organized and did not pose the kind of threat storms can later in the season. Continue reading →

Was the recent tornado outbreak forecasted?

The recent tornado outbreak in the Plains States was predicted by forecasters at the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., as far as seven days in advance. This kind of forecast undoubtedly contributed to a vigilance that resulted in only six lives being lost in this first major outbreak of the year. Continue reading →
